Indications/Uses
URTI including sinusitis, otitis media, tonsillitis; lower resp tract infections including bacterial pneumonia, bronchitis, UTI, pyelonephritis; skin, soft tissue & gonococcal infections. Oral follow-up therapy to Unasyn IM/IV.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult including elderly & childn ≥30 kg 375-750 mg bd. Uncomplicated gonorrhea 2.25 g as single dose w/ concomitant probenecid 1 g to prolong plasma conc of Unasyn. Childn <30 kg 25-50 mg/kg daily in 2 divided doses.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if serious & occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) & severe skin reactions, superinfection occur. Not to be used in infectious mononucleosis. Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organism; Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Periodically check for organ system dysfunction during prolonged therapy. Renal function in neonates. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Drug-induced hepatic injury. Pregnancy. Not recommended during lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Candida infection; headache; diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea; rash, pruritus.
Drug Interactions
Increased incidence of rashes w/ allopurinol. Additive effects w/ anticoagulants. Interfered bactericidal effect w/ bacteriostatic drugs eg, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, sulfonamides, tetracyclines. Reduced effectiveness of estrogen-containing OCs. Decreased MTX clearance. Decreased renal tubular secretion by probenecid. False +ve glycosuria test.
